SUMMARY:Pittsburgh-Weirton-Monongahela 200K Brevet
DESCRIPTION:Another classic early-season ride\, starting in Homestead PA and striking east to Weirton West Virginia before returning via the south along the Mon River. Of some note is that the last 40-ish miles of this route are nearly flat (by southwestern PA standards\, anyway)\, providing a welcome respite from our otherwise unrelenting hills. \nRegistration closes: Thursday March 20th 2025 \nInspection opens: Saturday March 22nd 06:30 AM \nRequirements: current RUSA membership\, signed waiver \nRide start: Saturday March 22nd 7:00 AM (13:30 time limit) \nRoute: \n

SUMMARY:Kittens and Puppies Monaca 100K Populaire
DESCRIPTION:Taking the pleasant Ohio-based portions of our classic Kittens and Puppies route\, but skipping the ever-worsening segment on Rt 51\, this is a pleasant jaunt into eastern Ohio and back.\nThe ride starts and ends in Monaca\, PA\, at Pump House Park. (Note that there is parking at several locations scattered around the park\, all within a few hundred feet of one another). \n  \nScouting notes\, April 2nd 2025: \n– Construction on River Road (mile 10/mile 55): one lane road\, with traffic signal to control traffic flow. \n– Construction on 170 in New Middleton: 170 is closed past the Subway at the turnaround\, so shouldn’t directly affect the route: do watch for poorer-than-usual road surface and unusual traffic patterns\, though. \n  \nRegistration closes: Thursday April 3rd 2025 \nInspection opens: Saturday April 5th 8:30 AM \nRequirements: current RUSA membership\, signed waiver \nRide start: Saturday April 5th 9:00 AM (6:40 time limit) \nRoute: \n

SUMMARY:Kittens & Puppies & Beaver 200K
DESCRIPTION:New for 2025: an homage to our long-departed flat riverside K&P route\, this route starts in Beaver Falls and heads west into Ohio. \nAlthough the first 4 miles are almost entirely uphill\, it’s a gradual climb\, with a strategically placed Sheetz just around the corner from the trailhead. \nRegistration closes: Thursday April 17th 2024 \nInspection opens: Saturday April 19th 6:30 AM \nRequirements: current RUSA membership\, signed waiver \nRide start: Saturday April 19th 7:00 AM (13:30 time limit) \nRoute:

SUMMARY:AMCUP 100K Populaire
DESCRIPTION:Running in conjunction with the AMCUP 200K\, both events leave Ohiopyle at 7 AM and share the same initial route over Sugarloaf into Confluence \nAfter Confluence\, we’ll make our way north through Kingwood and New Lexington before heading towards Normalville via the dreaded Jim Mtn Rd climb. Finally\, after crestijng Laurel Ridge\, we’ll enjoy a multi-mile descent into Connellsville\, where the GAP trail will provide a flat\, albeit limestone-covered and likely busy\, respite on the way back to Ohiopyle. \nThis is NOT a gentle 100K…be ye warned… \nNOTE: The descent on Sugarloaf has some very poor stretches of road\, starting around mile 6.2. Use extreme caution! \nRegistration closes: Thursday June 5th 2025 \nInspection opens: Saturday June 7th 6:30 AM \nRequirements: current RUSA membership\, signed waiver \nRide start: Saturday June 7th 7:00 AM (07:37 time limit) \nRoute: \n

SUMMARY:AMCUP 200K
DESCRIPTION:Running in conjunction with the new AMCUP 100K route\, both events leave Ohiopyle at 7 AM and share the same initial route over Sugarloaf into Confluence. \nAfter Confluence\, we’ll climb Mt Davis (the highest point in PA\, in theory) before dropping back down through Salisbury to Frostburg and the turnaround in Cumberland. From there\, it’s overland through Meyersdale to Confluence and a return to Ohiopyle via Sugarloaf in the other direction. \nMake no mistake: this is a hard 200K. Fun\, though\, and we’ll earn some spectacular views. \nNOTE: The descent on Sugarloaf has some very poor stretches of road\, starting around mile 6.2. Use extreme caution! \nRegistration closes: Thursday June 5th 2025 \nInspection opens: Saturday June 7th 6:30 AM \nRequirements: current RUSA membership\, signed waiver \nRide start: Saturday June 7th 7:00 AM (13:30 time limit) \nRoute: \n

SUMMARY:AMCUP 400K
DESCRIPTION:Ah\, the AMCUP (Allegheny Mountains Cruel and Unusual Punishment) 400. \nIt starts and finishes in Washington\, PA\, and includes some of the more exciting climbs in the Laurel Highlands. It also includes a mind-boggling FIVE Sheetz controles\, although we do reuse them on occasion. \nCaveat\nLet me start by being very clear: this is the hardest ride we have in our catalog. It includes climbs of Chestnut Ridge and Mt Davis\, and is\, frankly\, unrelentingly non-flat until Meyersdale at mile 150. It has 18000′ of climbing\, of which more than 2/3rds is in the first 150 miles. \nThat said: it’s also a beautiful route\, featuring gorgeous views\, remote farm roads\, and all the Sheetz that anyone could ask for. \nRoute Notes\nWe’ll leave Washington PA bright and early\, escaping town as quickly as possible via 136. At this hour\, it’ll be very low traffic\, rolling road all the way to the bank of the Monongahela River and the first Sheetz controle. From there\, we’ll cross the Mon and head upriver for a few miles until climbing the ridge and heading through Perryopolis and Vanderbilt on the way to Dunbar.\nIn Dunbar\, the first major climb of the route begins…8 miles of Furnace Hill Rd\, before cresting Chestnut Ridge. It’s shaded and pleasant for most of the climb\, with only a couple of particularly steep spots…but it is a very long\, steady climb\, so be prepared.\nOnce atop the ridge\, we’ll narrowly miss visiting Frank Lloyd Wright’s Kentuck Knob (as the road betwixt there and Ohiopyle is too hazardous for official routing)\, and work our way around some undulating ridge top roads before plummeting to Ohiopyle State Park\, the next controle at Falls Market\, and a brief respite from climbing on the GAP trail to Confluence.  (Note that no services are available on-route after Ohiopyle for nearly 50 miles\, although some are available off-route in Confluence.)\nIn Confluence\, we’ll bid farewell to the GAP for a while\, and head to our second major climb on Mt Davis Rd. While we won’t go all the way to the highest point in PA\, we’ll certainly get within yelling distance thereof. Much like Furnace Hill Rd out of Dunbar\, this is a very long\, steady climb with a couple of steeper parts; however\, it’s more open country\, so the views will be significantly more expansive\, and shade will be less.\nAfter the main climb up Mt Davis\, the route bends south into Maryland and a long drop through Frostburg (and another Sheetz controle) into the outskirts of Cumberland. Rather than fight traffic on the way back up the hill\, we’ll pick up the GAP at the Cash Valley Trailhead and take it back to Frostburg in relative ease and comfort.\nFrom Frostburg (see the note of caution and suggestion of alternate route below)\, another 20ish hilly miles remain before the Meyersdale Sheetz controle. Of particular note: on Sand Springs Rd\, we pass directly through a wind farm with a couple of windmills immediately off route to left and right; depending on your affinity for windmills\, this may make the poor road surface of Sand Springs Rd worthwhile. Alternatively\, those who do not relish potholed gravel roads (or potentially riding them in the dark) should consider the alternative routing for safety purposes.\nAfter Meyersdale\, we finally have a real reprieve from climbing…it’s 55 miles of gentle flat riding on hard packed limestone trail from here until Connellsville\, with the only real concerns being lack of places to resupply\, and (potentially cranky) Ohiopyle park rangers who don’t want to deal with cyclists at night.\nOut of Connellsville\, it’s a brief grunt over the hill back to Vanderbilt\, then following rolling Rt 201 to the bank of the Mon River\, and a return to the Sheetz in Monongahela for the last controle. From there\, in order to avoid potential boozy post-bar traffic\, we take back roads mostly paralleling I-70 all the way to the finish in Washington. \nSpecific route notes\n\n\nWhen coming into Frostburg at mile 133\, I recommend considering the time of day and your condition. The on-road leg from here to Meyersdale includes Sand Spring Rd\, which is a poorly surfaced at best\, and is dirt\, gravel\, and the odd pothole for much of its length. If you do not have confidence in your ability to make it 20 hilly miles to Meyersdale by dusk\, I both grant permission and explicitly recommend that you stay on the trail from Frostburg to Meyersdale\, then simply duck down to the Sheez controle before continuing on the trail to Confluence.\nWhen returning to the hotel\, there’s only one law-abiding way to do it (Right at TFL by the Amoco onto Rte 19/Murtland Ave\, down the hill to make a U-turn at the next TFL and back up the hill). In theory\, one might also go straight through the TFL by the Amoco to cross 19 into the construction site across the street\, then find a creative way to cut through to the back of the hotel parking lot\, or walk the verge of Rte 19 for 75 feet to get to the hotel.\n\n\nKey refueling options\nMile 19/km 31\, Controle 2: Monongahela Sheetz\nMile 43/km 69\, Sweet Pea’s Convenience Store\nMile 68/km 110\, Controle 3: Ohiopyle Falls Market\, no services on route for next 50 miles\nMile 79/km 127\, Confluence stores\, off route\nMile 115/km 184\, Controle 4: Frostburg Sheetz\nMile 150/km 241\, Controle 6: Meyersdale Sheetz\, no services for next 60 miles\nMile 207/km 333\, Controle 7: Connellsville Sheetz\nMile 238/km 382\, Controle 8: Monongahela Sheetz\n\n\nDetails\nRegistration closes: Thursday June 12th \nInspection opens: Saturday June 14th 3:30 AM \nRequirements: current RUSA membership\, signed waiver\, headlight/taillight/reflective gear \nRide start: Saturday June 14th 4:00 AM (27:00 time limit) \nRoute:\n

SUMMARY:Monongahela - Castleman's Run - Waynesburg 200K RUSA Brevet
DESCRIPTION:A somewhat hilly route out of the Aquatorium in Monogahela. We’ll head west\, skirting Washington PA\, until turning southbound at the West Virginia border through the Castleman’s Run Nature Preserve\, heading towards a controle stop at the bustling TA Travel Plaza near Valley Grove. From there\, more country roads to the next controle at the Sheetz in Waynesburg\, and a return to the start. \nNote re: parking. Parking in the Aquatorium itself is limited\, and nominally restricted to 4 hours. I’d suggest parking on nearby Railroad St\, between the Sheetz and the Aquatorium. \nRegistration closes: Thursday June 26th 2025 \nInspection opens: Saturday June 28th 6:30 AM \nRequirements: current RUSA membership\, signed waiver\, headlight/taillight/reflective gear \nRide start: Saturday June 28th 7:00 AM (13:30 time limit) \nEPoP: Due to abject laziness on the part of your humble RBA\, we default to electronic proof of passage (e.g Strava or other GPS track) in the Pittsburgh region brevets. SUMMARY:Mingo Creek Meander 100K Populaire
DESCRIPTION:This (relatively) gentle populaire lets us explore in the south a bit…starting with familiar roads through New Eagle and Monongahela (with the opportunity to visit the freshly rebuilt and reopened Sheetz)\, then up the Mon River through Charleroi and Belle Vernon to the tiny town of Roscoe and the first significant climb of the day. After the summit\, we’ll drop to Coal Center (beware of distracting river valley views to your left as you plummet!) and head west away from the river to mostly quiet country roads for the next 25 miles\, before heading north to Eighty Four and a familiar return to the park via Sugar Run Rd. \nThe route is back-loaded on climbing\, but front-loaded on traffic; and\, given our 7 AM start\, even that nominal traffic should be fairly minimal while we pass along the more heavily traveled segment by the river. \nSupply Controles: \nSunoco in  Charleroi\, mile 17 \nPadidle Donuts in Beallsville\, mile 35 \nCoen Markets in Eighty Four\, mile 55 \nRegistration closes: Thursday July 3rd\nInspection opens: Saturday July 5th 6:30 AM\nRide start: Saturday July 5th 7:00 AM (06:45 time limit) \nRequirements: current RUSA membership\, signed waiver \nEPoP: Due to abject laziness on the part of your humble RBA\, we default to electronic proof of passage (e.g Strava or other GPS track) in the Pittsburgh region brevets. Per Tom: \n\nThe name Ridge and Valley offers a clue to what the riding is like.  The ridge climbs on this ride aren’t easy\, but the valleys offer relatively flat terrain.  In a technique employed as much as possible\, we route through water gaps and around the ends of ridges to stay in the valleys\, but some ridge crossings can’t be helped.\n\nWe start the 1st day heading northeast\, leaving Pleasant Valley\, as we shoot through the water gap at Canoe Creek and take the Lower trail up to Alexandria. The Lower Trail is a gentle start to the day and very usefully cuts through the hills of Morrisons Cove\, and isn’t too terribly long  (17 miles or so)\, and even some of it is paved.  Near its northern terminus it cuts through the Williamsburg Mtn water gap\, and leaving the trail\, we enter Stone Valley.\n\nStone Valley is pretty lumpy\, but there are no big climbs.  But\, then the first ridge climb arrives over Barrville mountain on PA-305 instead.  On the flip side we enter the Amish paradise of Big Valley (aka Kish Valley\, aka Kishacoquillas Valley) for a rolling run to the first control in Milroy.  From Milroy\, we skirt past the 7-Mtns region by continuing northwest through a very quiet “lost” Lancaster valley (a place only visited by campers and hunters) where you slowly gain elevation\, and you jump over the ridge with a spiky\, but relatively low elevation gain (400 feet) ridge climb at the end of the valley.  We pass through the little towns of Troxelville and Penns Creek\, skirt around New Berlin Mountain and enter Buffalo Valley.  We will turn around at the Purple Cow Controle (with a great ice cream and fast food menu).  If their fare doesn’t please\, there is a Sheetz on the route just a few miles later.\n\nNow heading SW we make our way through Buffalo Valley on PA-45 to our 3rd ridge climb of the day past the Hairy John Picnic area (the local version of the BigFoot legend).  If you can hear something other than your own breathing you might catch a mysterious hoot or howl coming from the woods.  Now in Penns Valley\, we follow some very mellow creek roads till we are forced away from them and back into the rolling hills that take us into State College.  We control at a Sheetz in SC (at this point\, most likely eating a later afternoon or evening meal of sorts).  The route then follows more rolling terrain through Half Moon Valley to a stop in Warrior’s Mark\, and onto Spruce Creek. Here\, we have to address a short spiky climb to get us back over to the Lower Trail.  Most of us likely in the dark at this point\, the route retraces its steps back to the overnight control in Duncansville.\n\nOn Day 2\, we head south\, cutting through a water gap in Lock Mountain to Roaring Spring\, then running south through the idyllic farmlands of Morrisons Cove. Just 18 miles into the day\, we tackle the first of two ridge climbs of the day – or actually what is an elevated gap between Evitts Mtn. and Tussey Mtn.  It’s not very long\, but it’s pretty steep. Notable here at the summit are remnants of trenches that the Union Army prepared for a possible advance towards Altoona by the Confederates to take the railroad hub there that never happened.  This brings us into the northern Friends Cove\, then a stop in Everett for our first major control.  Stock up well\, because it’s going to be a difficult 50 miles before you can resupply.\n\nHeading south between Polish Mtn. and Warrior Ridge\, the terrain is fairly lumpy\, but not extreme\, and extremely quiet. Then after a short climb up to Warrior’s ridge\, we follow that ridge till the hamlet of Chaneysville.  The road into Chaneysville isn’t even quite two lanes in a lot of spots since it sees so little traffic.  We cut through Black Mtn water gap at Sweet Root creek and tackle a ridge climb up Tussey Mountain.  This climb is probably the hardest of the entire 600K.  It has a respectable 700 feet of elevation gain\, but most significantly\, it has a few steep bits in the 14-15% range.  With that behind us we have a rolling run down Beans Cove into MD and Rocky Gap Park.  .  A fast downhill to the west shuttles us to the southern end of Cumberland valley and we start heading north again.  We pass Lake Koon and tackle some fairly large hills\, but thankfully no more ridge climbs for the time being\, and finally reach a resupply point at Mom’s Quick stop – an oasis in the middle of a mostly empty Cumberland valley.\n\nLeaving Mom\, we continue on very quiet roads with some large hills\, some over a mile long\, but none very steep.  Most of them are pretty well shaded\, which no doubt will be welcome given the time of day they will be traversed.  Then we pass through Bedford\, and are forced out of the valley up a short\, very steep climb into Briar Valley.  The last big hill of the day awaits\, a partial climb up Evitts mountain.  Luckily we will turn off the climb about halfway up.  Another resupply in Claysburg Sheetz\, and it’s mostly sunshine and rainbows for another fairly flat 20 miles to the finish.\n\nBy the numbers\, the first day at 229 miles is 19 miles short of a 400K and has a relatively modest 52 feet of climbing per mile.  The second day is then\, of course\, 19 miles longer than a 200K\, and climbing is higher at 63 feet per mile.  The 2nd day is also a bit more remote\, with fewer opportunities to stop.  So\, the 2nd day is closer to being equal in difficulty to the first compared to how most 600Ks are structured (the 2nd day is still easier\, but we’re talking relative differences here).  The somewhat benign 1st day is meant to help give people (well\, me) the ability/confidence to start the 2nd day.  At least that’s the story I am sticking with.\n\nSumming it up\, most of the route is rural\, there are only a few busy connectors here and there for limited mileage.  Pavement quality is good overall – no need for fat tires.  There are some big gaps in resupply spots\, so you need to be able to bring at least 75oz of water on board – 90 or 100 would be better if it ends up being hot.\n  \nDetails\nWith a start\, overnight\, and finish at the Comfort Inn in Altoona\, this pleasant 600K offers easy self-support…so much so that we’re waiving all fees for this one\, since there’s no need for drop bag transport or extra hotel rooms. \nFull route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/51072979\nDay 1: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/50577351\nDay 2: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/51073052\nRegistration closes: Thursday July 10th \nInspection opens: Saturday July 14th 3:30 AM \nRequirements: current RUSA membership\, signed waiver\, headlight/taillight/reflective gear \nRide start: Saturday July 12th 4:00 AM (40:00 time limit) \nRoute:\n

SUMMARY:McConnell's Mills 200K
DESCRIPTION:The McConnell’s Mills 200K route has undergone a bit of revision since its inception: one of the controles (the Creighton Sheetz) no longer exists\, and the final leg of the route passes through an area that has become quite trafficky and unpleasant later in the day.\nSo\, we’ve moved the start to North Park\, allowing us to get through the Glenshaw area early in the day (as well as to stop using RBA Emeritus Jim’s house as the start and finish controle).\nOnce escaping the city\, we follow the Allegheny River upstream as far as Tarentum\, before heading north through Butler on the way to West Sunbury. There\, the traditional country market stop is now more\, and has been sadly replaced with a photo control. Then we strike out westward through Liberty to Portersville and skirting McConnell’s Mill State Park. In Ellwood City\, we make our first formal Sheetz stop of the day\, before heading back to North Park via Brush Creek and Cranberry. \nRoute notes: \n\nWhile there are plenty of supply options as far as Butler (around mile 50)\, there is little available on route until 45 miles later in Ellwood City. If you find yourself caught short\, there are truck stops on 422 15 miles earlier\, just off route(stay straight on Curry Rd at mile 80.5 instead of turning R on Fisher Rd)\n\nRegistration closes: Thursday August 21st\nInspection opens: Saturday August 23rd 6:30 AM\nRide start: Saturday August 23rd 7:00 AM (13:30 time limit) \nRequirements: current RUSA membership\, signed waiver \nEPoP: Due to abject laziness on the part of your humble RBA\, we default to electronic proof of passage (e.g Strava or other GPS track) in the Pittsburgh region brevets. SUMMARY:Hickory Hills 100K Populaire
DESCRIPTION:Okay\, first off\, let me be clear…it’s actually 108K\, if that deters anyone 🙂 \nThis one has a mix of traditional and new segments\, with the majority of roads smoothly paved (but a few miles of unpaved dirt and occasional gravel to keep it interesting). \nStarting at the Park-n-Ride lot in downtown Carnegie\, PA\, we take advantage of the early hour to avoid the worst of the crazed shopper traffic on Rt 50 in Heidelberg\, before taking classic cycling roads Thoms Run/Presto-Sygan/Millers Run to rejoin 50 in Cecil Township. After crossing under the Montour Trail in Venice\, we’ll gradually climb to Hickory before enjoying a long fast descent to our first controle at the Avella Uni-Mart. \nWe’ll then do our best to avoid roads with any paint on them for the next twenty miles or so miles\, until we join Steubenville Pike and head east to our next controle at the Florence Grab-n-Go. \nAfter a very brief stint on trafficky Rt 18\, we’ll try to avoid consistent pavement entirely as we pass through Hillman State Park\, with a pause at the Lyle Covered Bridge for a photo controle. \nContinuing eastward\, we’ll pass through more country roads (as well as an enormous Amazon distribution facility) through Imperial PA to a short stint on the Montour Trail and another photo controle\, this time at the Enlow Tunnel. \nFinally\, we’ll climb back up the ridge\, then make our way to Carnegie via the reverse of our classic Ewing Rd/Ridge Rd/Bayer Rd route. \nRegistration closes: Thursday October 2nd\nInspection opens: Saturday October 4th 6:30 AM\nRide start: Saturday October 4th 7:00 AM (06:45 time limit) \nRequirements: current RUSA membership\, signed waiver \nEPoP: Due to abject laziness on the part of your humble RBA\, we default to electronic proof of passage (e.g Strava or other GPS track) in the Pittsburgh region brevets. SUMMARY:Kittens and Puppies and Beaver 200K
DESCRIPTION:Introduced just last year\, this is an homage to our long-departed flat riverside K&P route on Rte 51. \nUnlike the original route\, this one starts in Beaver Falls and heads west into Ohio. \nAlthough the first 4 miles are almost entirely uphill\, it’s a gradual climb\, with a strategically placed Sheetz just a couple miles from the start and shortly before the first turn. \nParking at the trailhead itself is *very* limited\, but there is plenty of street parking nearby. \nRegistration closes: Friday April 17th 2026 \nInspection opens: Sunday April 19th 6:30 AM \nRequirements: current RUSA membership\, signed waiver \nRide start: Sunday April 19th 7:00 AM (13:30 time limit) \nRoute:
