Because it was so much fun in May, we’re re-running the 400K as a RUSA brevet!
This route is part of our kinder, gentler “Kittens and Puppies” brevet series; a set of 100K, 200K, 300K, and 400K out-and-back routes starting in Pittsburgh, PA and heading towards Akron, Ohio. While certainly not flat, we’ve endeavored to minimize the elevation gain and navigational challenges, in order to provide events more attractive to novice randonneurs.
The 400K starts at the Super 8 Motel in Harmarville.
While sharing common ancestry with previous Kittens and Puppies routes, this one eschews a return along the Ohio River in favor of an overland jaunt on traditional club roads in the north.
We’ll start in Harmarville, then make our way along the bank of the Allegheny through downtown Pittsburgh, then through the West End and down the Ohio to our first controle, the Neville Island 7-11. From there, we’ll follow the 300K route up through Monaca, Rochester, and Beaver Falls, before our next controle at Al’s Corner in Koppel. A few slight modifications to the 300K route (mostly avoiding easy-to-miss turns, cratered road surfaces, and areas of heavy traffic) will take us through one Sheetz in Beaver, OH to our turnaround point, another Sheetz in Hartville.
From the turnaround, we’ll retrace our path as far as Koppel, then strike off overland through Ellwood City, Zelienople, Evans City, Mars (with a 7-11 on route, in case supplies are needed), an info controle in Curtisville, and Russelton, on our way back to Harmarville.
